Counter push-up

Also called counter push-ups, kitchen counter push-ups or incline push-ups.

Counter push-up: start and finish positions, drawn as a line figure

How to do a counter push-up

  1. Choose a kitchen counter or worktop that is solid and cannot move.
  2. Place your hands flat on the edge, shoulder width apart, and step your feet back a little.
  3. Keeping your body in one straight line, bend your elbows to bring your chest towards the counter.
  4. Push back up to the start, breathing out as you push.

In Vaskuna the voice says: “Hands flat on a kitchen counter, shoulder width. Bend your elbows, then push back.”

Go gently

Use a surface that cannot move. Keep your body in one straight line.

Breathe in as you lower and out as you push back up.

Make it easier

Step your feet closer to the counter, or do the wall push instead.

Make it a little harder

Step your feet a little further back, or lower more slowly, keeping your body in one straight line.

Have within reach

  • A worktop or kitchen counter

In a session

In Vaskuna this usually lasts 50 seconds. It is part of two routines: Wall strength, Full body steady.

Questions

What is the difference between a wall push and a counter push-up?

The movement is the same, but the counter is lower, so you lean further forward and carry more of your weight. Many people start with the wall push and move on to the counter when it feels easy.

What kind of surface should I use for counter push-ups?

A solid kitchen counter or worktop that cannot move or tip. Avoid tables on wheels, folding tables or anything that slides. Make sure your feet will not slip on the floor.
